I'm thinking of getting a new return pump for my new setup (25g) instead of using a sen pump I've had laying around for a while. The sen pump loses more flow due to head pressure than other pumps out there, which may be a problem since I'm teeing off the return to feed my fuge. I'm looking at these pumps:

Eheim 1262

or

Mag 9.5

Both have similar flow output and react to head pressure in the same way. I like the mag pump for its price tag (:) ) but I already own a mag 5 and 7 and know that the larger you go, the louder and hotter they get. From what I hear, the eheims don't run as hot and are much quieter.

Is it worth the extra $75 to get the eheim or would I be just as happy getting the Mag 9.5? If you have any experience with either or both of these pumps, that would be great. Thanks

LOL! I think I get the picture! I know the drawbacks of the mags (heat noise, etc), but I thought I would still ask.

I think I'll still hook up what I've got now just ot run the system, check for leaks, etc...but a new pump is definatly on the list. Thanks for the input AJ...are you sure you don't work for Eheim? lol

Better still, why not go with an external pump such as a Mak4. It could provide the return flow for your tank, feed a fuge, Ca reactor, etc. as well and won't heat your water. It'll also allow you to upgrade at a later date without having to upgrade your return pump.

I don't have the room in or around my stand to have an external pump (as much as I would like to!). In 2 years time I'm doing the "tank of my dreams" (180g-220g) which will definatly have one, but for now, I have to settle with an in-sump pump. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Yeah, I think I'll go with the 1262, I just needed the words of encouragement from everyone to do so. Thanks for the recommendation!

For a 25g I'd go for the 1260 or 1250.

I too would choose the Eheim over the Mag9. I've used a mag2 externally which I liked on my old 29g actually I used to one for the return and one for the CL and they were quiet and I had no complaints.

I used a Mag7 for a submersable return on my old 75, no problems except for heat.

Now I use a Mag12 for my CL and it is loud and annoying, I will be changing it shortly.

Although I also had a ehiem that leaked current when use submersed. Actually I think I had a mag5 that leaked current aswell along with a few Rio pumps
