Hi gang,

I have some live rock, and stuff starting to grow, wondering what they are. I have numbered them to make it easier to tell me. Thanks in advance. 75 gallon tank.

Pic 8 - looks like either a leather of some kind or a star polyp (look at pics of green star polyps to see if similar)

Pic 7 - ???

Pic 6 - looks like a small mushroom (or possibly a small anemone)

Pic 5 - sponge

Pic 4 - hydroids - not good

Pic 3 - fish - looks like a damsel but very blurry

Pic 2 - Domino damsel

Pic 1 - Clown - think it is a clarkii

Hope this helps a bit.

Mark

I think 7 & 8 are Star Polyps.

Here's my attempt at IDing. These are alwyas fun.

Pic 8 - Briarium or Star Polyps (usually Star Polyps have a violet base though)
Pic 7 - same as 8 I think but ess base Matt.
Pic 6 - small anemone I think called a Ball anemone (PseudoCoralmorpharian?) (spelling). They usually like the dark, or shade, and have balls at the end of their tentacles.

Pic 5 - Tunicates
Pic 4 - Hydroids
fishPic 3 - fish - looks like a damsel but very blurry
fiahPic 2 - Domino damsel
fishPic 1 - Clown - think it is a clarkii

Pic 2 - Finger Leather
Pic 1 - Mushroom - (Discosma Striata?)

gigerous,

Is this your tank, one that you've inherited, or some one's tank that you're looking to get id's for? Sorry for the questions but some of those pictures seem odd to be asking ID's for if it was your tank.

Also, could you please edit you sig to include your tank and specs.

Sorry gang,

Yes I inhereted the tank, so i am clueless on what stuff is, that is why i am here. I have read up and stuff and the local saltwater guy is helping me alot. I really am trying to bone up on all the terminologys but woah this is alot different than my 75 gal freshwater lol. I have a 75 gal freshwater tank as well and couldnt pass this up. I'm not sure about my sig I tried to fill out all I knew.. It is 19" back, 18" high and 48" wide 75 gal I check all the ammonia, etc. weekly, protein empty every two days, oh, and I know my starfish is a brittle star :-) I am not sure what I need more in my sig, but I will put it in if you tell me, I am not sure what else I need in my tank, let me know, I am in a pool and I need a life preserver lol

Welcome to the saltwater world of chaos.

You've made two very important steps, finding a support group and a local mentor. Another idea would be to join a local saltwater club. Seeing a tank set up first hand can be a real benefit, as well as the wealth of knowledge.

Thanks for editing you sig. You might want to consider getting a new heater. Cheaper heaters aren't that good at keeping a stable temp and when they go they can take the whole tank with them. You should also get rid of those hydroids before they become a real problem.

Hit the search, read up, and post a question if you can't find the answer. There are also some excellent tutorials found in the Just Getting Started (http://aquariumpros.ca/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=24) forum.

Welcome aboard :pompom:

Thanks for the welcome I feel at home. I know it was the right move to join one of these because you guys were where I am now once :-)

I am not sure of any clubs in the northbay area, anyone know? I am going to the April 14th MAST auction and joing up them to it, I will only go a couple time a year with the family but hope to make some contacts there. Maybe getting so, "frag" swapping going. yep I learned that term lol

Is there a heater you suggest and where?

How do I get rid of the hydroids?

Thanks again

If you look at others sigs Ebo's seem to be popular. Another popular type of heater is a titanium heater. Try to find a heater that keeps the temp within 0.5 of a degree and is submersible.

Yep we've all been new to the hobby and chances are that someone else has had that problem. If you do a search you may find the answer to your questions. Have a go at searching hydroid (http://aquariumpros.ca/forums/search.php) and reading. If you have more questions feel free to post them.

Thnx for the info, one guy said vinegar in a suringe directed at them works, wonder if he means in the tank, or out? any clues?

You can dose the hydroids with vinegar in the tank as long as you don't use too much. Position the syringe close to the hydroids and slowly squirt the vinegar on the hydroids. If you can remove the affected rock, mix up a paste of kalkwasser and vinegar and apply to the hydroids. Let sit for approx. 15 minutes, rinse with some tank water and replace the rock. You may have to do a few treatments until they're all gone.

Hi gang,

picked up an ebo 300w heater and i have edited my sig to that effect.

BTW, my local dealer here is Bob Duchene of superior reef aquatics. For a small town we have a big saltwater guy here, his basement is full I mean full, and great prices from what i have been reseraching. He is great to chat to aobut things.

Welcome aboard!

Your finger leather is Sinularia, they grow to monsterous sizes, give them alot of room because they are mildly aggressive and will sting other corals (the whole chemical warfare thing).

P.S. You might want to take hydroids out of your sig.

.............welcome to the endless world of saltwater reef keeping!.....
