I'm going to attempt to make my own sump , I've noticed alot of sumps have their overflows empty into a micron sock . Does anyone know of an online Canadian supplier and what is the reason that this method is used . Let me know the good, the bad and the ugly or any input at all ! Thanks , Kevin:)

Most use the sock to pic up floating depreay.. like waste and food.. It works well but needs to be changed or cleaned every couple of days..

So they would use this instead of a pre filter like bio balls or ceramic discs , right? Does anyone know where to purchase them in Canada online , there's no lfs that carries them , let alone knows even what they are , around here . Maybe you don't even get them from a lfs , if anyone knows please help , Thanks , Kevin

they are avaible up here at Big Als..
People dont like to use the other prefilters just becouse they are harder to clean and they build up Nitrates..

A micron sock full of activated carbon works real well at reducing microbubbles as well!
An added bonus is pristine clear water :)

Thanks for the info Tang-man , I was just trying to figure a way to incorporate this part of filtering into my sump when your thread came thru . Sound like a excellent idea !:) Thanks for the help , willing to hear any more if you have them , also if there is any things that I should know or change to my sump as it is still on the drawing board. So far it's a 30 g with a sump in one end , return in the middle and a refugium at the other. Now that we've got the placement of carbon figured out I'll move on to return pump size ! Thanks again, Kevin

My sump design sounds similar to yours....
although, my overflow from my main tank is at one end, followed by the refugirum with Macro algae and a 3" DSB in the middle, then the return pump (mag12) on the other end. All of this is ofcoarse separated by baffles.
Another thing you could try is incorporating a "tray" of sorts with lighting eggcrate within the baffles instead of the micron sock to hold up the media (ie: carbon).
Hope that helps.
