Ok guys: I have saved 8 containers of water change in these garbage cans(144L) purchased from Canadian Tire. The idea being to use it in setting up my new 180. Well since then (started 4 months ago) I have read that toxins may be released into the water from some of these containers? I put a powerhead in each container for circulation during storage. Should I still use this for the new fill up or start from scratch? Thanks for any of your views on this. Dass

Use the search feature here on AP and you will find ton's of material about what containers to use to store your water in.

I've also heard, and it may not be true, that r/o water can be stored in food grade containers, but not r/o d/i water.

for all your water storage, as george mentioned, you should only use food-grade containers, as other types of containers will leach toxins into the water their holding. I think this topic has been discussed at length here so try doing a search on it.
Seeing how your water has been sitting for an extended period of time I would discard it

is this a Rubbermaid garbage can?? if so, check under the can and look for a recycle sign (3 arrows in circular orientation)....there should be some letters in the middle of the arrows (might be HDPE, LDPE, PP, among others) let us know what you find...that makes a big difference;
see this thread for some great info:

Definitely - discard the water.

Thanks Zach and AJ, those are good information. Gotta make a bookmark.
BTW, is there a bookmark function in AP to bookmark important threads? Or can we put those bookmarks in RODI forum?
thanks

You can always click on the Thread Tools pull-down at the top of any thread - then select Subscribe to Thread - you can then access all your subscribed threads via your UserCP for future reference.
Also - in the Main Menu block at the left side of all site pages - you will see a link to AP Web Links - here you will find many more links to important info, as well as Members can ADD links too! Same holds true for AP Reviews.
Lastly - when/if you find a thread that should be made *Sticky - please let any of the Mods/Admin know - and we can make it so. This also relates to Thread Ratings - as this helps us moderate which threads are sources of great info too.

All of those listed are food grade, and safe. Correct?

Thought this might be interesting. Someone just sent it to me. Open the attachment.
How to avoid:
Check on the bottom of the bottle there is a triangle sign and there will
be a number on it. If the number is higher than or equal to 5 --> then this bottle is safe to use.
Whatever number under 5 will release the
chemical. For most bottle water, the number is
1.

Thanks guys for all the responses, really appreciated! I will check the symbols and if it needs to be discarded will definitely do so. I sure am glad I asked before I took any action. Many thanks again. Dass

Personally, I would discard the water. Even if it was in food-safe containers, starting a new tank with water that has been sitting for 4 months is just too risky considering all the effort and money you put into your setup. The cost for new water and salt is a lot less than the loss of your livestock and your system crashing. JMHO

I don't really know if the attachement is a hoax or not. :) It sure sounds very fishy.

I've certainly heard that you should freeze bottled water as the plastic will release carcinogens if you do (same if you microwave plastic containers for food, etc).

er...that should read "shouldn't freeze..."

I have looked through my husbands company enviromental books concerning recycled material, plastics and or enviromentally safe water storage containers and the enviroment. I couldnt find anything that even resembles that attachment. Sorry. It certainly seems like a hoax.

I already have made the thread containing this info a Sticky...but posting this specific data individually is indeed a great idea. I will create this later today!
Thanks for the input - as always - greatly appreciated!!
