Any pump that you can fit in the overflow will work. The think you are going to have to be really carefull with is power outages. With the sump above the tank and being gravity fed extra water in the sump will end up flowing back to the main tank or the overflow box and over the top of it if the pumps stop running. You can probably get away from this with the use of syphon break holes etc if put in the right places. I think you may run into problems trying to regulate the water too. Out of curiousity why do you have the sump above the tank? If you can post a sketch of what you are doing with the location of overflows etc relative to each other it will be easier to see potential problems.

Sump is over your tank... Thats a brain teaser! It almost makes your tank into a sump. I guess thats where your sump fits best though...
The big Disadvantage is that all your water level fluctuations are shown in the main tank. And maybe surface skimming in your main tank might be tough.

I think that you should put your overflow on your above tank sump, and let the water flow from that down to your tank.

You'd then run a pump directly from your Main tank up to your sump using a strong external pump. Affix the pump inlet hose to suck water out of your tank an inch from the top. That way you'll never drain the main tank entirely if the sump leaks or the sump doesnt drain into the main tank as fast as the water is getting pumped back up...

Thats my 2¢

Thats kinda what i was thinking cause if he was to use the overflow on the main tank then as the water evap[orated the water flowing through the overflow would get less and less, the pump in the overflow would be running at the same speed so would eventually run drry and fry itself. I may be missing something he has planned to acomidate this but i don't know what.
