Don't uase this filter all the time....it'll becaome a Nitrate factory adn raise you nitrates through the roof over time. I keep the same filter for my tanks.
If you have Live Rock, and skimmer, and sand bed, after amonth or so you won't need the Fluval filter. You can use it at the start for a month or two to get your tank established.
With mine (at the start) I put bio balls, ceramic rings, and carbon in it. I cycled my tank and then hooked it up after the tank was cycled. this then helped establish beneficial bacteria in the system. once I stocked my tank with livestock, I removed the Fluval.
Don't throw it away or sell it....you still need it....
Now I use the Fluval periodically for adding carbon to my tank. When I medicate for anything, I use the carbon to remove the medication when done. About every 2 months, I will run the Fluval with just carbon to clear up the water, if needed. Now after a year with the tank, the Fluval is rarely used. It is now just a carbon filter for me in case of an emergency.
Good Luck

I can't think of any other ways off the top of my head. Personally i would just leave it out o fthe system myself and save it for running charcoal etc as has been suggested. If you are looking for extra flow use it till you can purchase a similar rated powerhead etc.
