How much live rock is should I purchase for a 29 G tank?
Can you use half live rock and a half of cheaper rock (do not know which type).
Where is the best place to buy in the Toronto area?

Thanks Chris

Go with at least 30 pounds and more if you can do it and still keep the appearance you want. You can use base rock under some live rock, but for this amount, you'd benefit so much by just using all live rock. I know Big Al's and many other places carry base rock. I personally would try to get 40-50 pounds in the tank, as long as it's the look I want. Really depends on what type of aqua scaping you want to do.
Good Luck

Take a run out to see the guys (Flavio and/or Tom) @ Oakville Reef Gallery. They regularly get in Walt Smith Fiji Premium, as well as other types (such as Indo Pacific).

Let them know that you were sent in by AJ @ AquariumPros!!

It's really about what kind of tank you want to set up... Some people pick a section of reef and build their tank to ook like that... If you did a lagoon reef. you wouldnt use much live rock, but lots of sandbed surface area...

I've got one tank set up with two mountains of rock, and the fish swim between these two "bonnies". Tha way if you stick an anemonie on one rock, it cant easily get off and sting things on the other rock.

I think the rule of thumb is often 1.5 lbs of rock per gallon. But it's really up to what your looking to build.

A sandbed can contain just as much or more beneficial bacteria as rock. But rock offers more hiding spots for fish...

Plan out your tank and decide.
Have fun!

I was at Oakville Reef Gallery the other day. They have alot of Live rock there right now. They had Figi, Kaleni, and I think a few pieces of Marshall Island. The Kaleni rock was very well covered in every colour you could imagine. Worth a look.

The amount of weight of rock is really a personal preferance. Rock from different areas have different densities. You may find that rock from 2 areas will weigh the same amount, but that you will only be able to fit 30 lbs of one type while you might be able to fit 45lb of another.
Basically if you have a DSB the amount of live rock isn't as big of a concern. Myself, i prefer the look of a more open rock structure giving the corals shelfs and more room to grow. My tank isn't really set up this way at the moment as the rocks i have don't lend themself to making this possible. When i get a new tank setup i will be trying to make more terraces etc.

IMO 1lb/gallon is more than adaquate. You can always add more at a later date if you feel more is needed.

Also, I would try buying BIG pieces rather than a bunch of little ones. Looks better that way usually I think.

One thing I've been daydreaming about is taking a concrete saw to some live rock and cutting a perfectflat back and one side to it so I could just have one Huge rock that fits perfect into the tank. I would also drill 3 holes that fit; 2 power heads and heater in there, so that I none of these things would be visable. Like a spray bar bmade outa live rock.

I would love to see a picture of that if you ever get daring enough to try. Sounds like a great idea. I am always looking for places to hide my powerheads etc.

Sounds like a great idea, but i would think putting a sump in would be much easier.

You could always try to make an arago crete type rock build with the holes and angles you require.
