View Full Version : misbar + misbar = misbar ?

I am just wondering if there are any clownfish pattern correlations, like:

full bar + full bar = full bar
full bar + misbar = ?
misbar + misbar = ?
etc...

type of thing, any clownfish breeders or exbreeder can share some insight into this?

Thanks

if the two clowns both have misbars (on both sides) then that's the dominant gene...so the offspring will undoubtedly have misbars on both sides as well

always aim to get a clown with at least one side with perfect bars...that way the 'perfect' gene is still present, albeit recessive

that's why high-end clownfish pairs are soooo damn expensive....perfect bars are hard as heck to find

hehehehe :)

but it's all relative.....misbarred clowns still garner a high price....no matter how you look at it...they're quite rare.....

that being said...i'm hoping to start breeding clowns by year's end...only black ocellaris clowns....if it works out i'll have them for sale super cheap....wish me luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think perfect bars are hard to find LOL unless it's black ocellaris you are talking about.

I also think that misbar is actually a recessive gene and only gets exhibit when there are more inbreeding occuring. In nature, only 1 clownfish out of a whole batch gets to survive and you see a lot more clownfish with full bar. Therefore fullbar is actually dominant or prefered (for mates), if misbar is a dominant gene, it will occur much more often in nature and will get into the trade much more often.

Being said, most of the tank raised clowns are in-breeded, so therefore it will create more misbar proportions than in the wild.

This is just my hypothesis and observation.

that's why i'm actively searching for other black ocellaris clowns....i'll mix and match them with my current pair....should provide the needed gene diversty.......oh man...its tough to find these fish outside of the U.S.. *le sigh*

buddy check australia, that's where they originated from.

Have an interesting thread on RC about this scientist got some black tomato like clown. (no, it's not a melanopus but dark black)

LOL! i'm not going to order them from Australia.....that's madness!..(and next to impossible with my budget)

fun fact....did u know they're known as Darwin clownfish?? i never knew that until a few months ago.....it's their actual common name, not black ocellaris....named as such due to the wacked out genetic mutation they've inherited....hahaha

lots of people have them here...you just have to look hard and be ready to wheel and deal on the spot....i KNOW i can find them....it's just a matter of time.

dunno about the black tomato...i really have no patience for aggressive clowns...seems like an oxymoron anyways....not my thing...my favs are the onyxs, darwins and perculas.. ;)

It's not a tomato as the species goes, it's a ULTRA ULTRA rare clown that is black with white strips like tomato. Even if you have money you might not get them in (legally) becuase it's not allow to be collected. But of course, clownfish is just a clownfish afterall. Unless we have too much money to spend.

Doesn't make that much of a difference where you get them from. All of them are from a handful that were imported via expedition and subsequently bred by ORA about ten years back. From what I understand, they come from a very small stretch of southern Austrailian coastline infested with saltwater crocs and that there is only one or two people crazy enough by Austrailian standards to even dive those waters, never mind collect. And with Austrailia having some of the most stringent exportation laws on the planet, getting new linage is damn near impossible.
There was a fairly lengthly debate regarding this very subject in the breeding forum on RC. Apparently there will be something published on this topic in the very near future.
