Plankton and UV Sterilizers

Hi all: 2 things I would like to get some input on.

125 gallon reef---corals and anemones, fishes

1. which do you feel is beter for sterilization: UV or filters?

2. If we were to grow our own plankton..err...hatch it...whatever the correct term is..is it difficult or expensive.
Or do you suggest we start with buying it?
