well i am not sure if you really want to use dry coral.. as in staghorn or some other skeleton type of corals...
why you ask...
well how is it prepared..was it actually bleached.. like in javex..or something like that... do you want that in your tank.. even if it has been at the LFS.. is it safe to use..
yes there is something to use...
base rock... actually it is live rock that aint live.. if you get what what i mean... it is cheaper and serves the purpose as a good base to build on.. if you are looking for something that will actually end up being covered by your live rock..then this what to use.. and even if it does show.. give it a few months..and it will be the same look as the live stuff...and it will eventually be live again... believe it or not..!!
hope this helps...now where in the heck are you gonna get some out there on the east coast.. ???:fish:

Hi Puff.
I am a new member who has been lurking for the past month. I am researching salt water as I too would like to set up a FOWLR tank after Christmas. I have been haunting the lfs in Saint John . I haven't asked any for base rock, but Pets Unlimited would be your only hope. I did find a place in Moncton that sells LR, LS and base rock. The problem is I can't remember the name of the shop, but I talked to the owner for quite a while and he seems quite knowledgable. He has been there for 15 years. It is in the Champlain Mall so it should be just a phone call to the administration office to get the number. Hope this helps.

Hey...
Despite that fact that I LOVE having you all here...what about checking with AquariumPros.ca for your LR needs?
Just an   ;)

Sorry, I didn't mean to post any inappropriate remarks. Being fairly new around here, I was not aware that you sold LR, etc. As I don't have the proper software I can't view your stocklist, which is where I assume those items must be listed. I have been anxiously waiting for you to complete the shopping cart on this site so I can see what is available. I am sure we will be doing lots of business in the future.

If you really wanted to you could make your own base rock, and seed it with live rock. This is a bit more time consuming, but you could make the rocks shaped in ways you wanted. This could be good for asthetics where you are doing live rock only.

Canuck,
I may be wrong but I always thought live rock was old coral skeletons.. and well if base rock is dead live rock then dead coral skeletons would be the same.. I know Bleach isn't the coolest thing to have in a tank but if you boil it a couple of times that will be taken care of. and even then to be safe let it soak for a couple days. I think old skeletons would be a perfect thing for base rubble.. really porous and some interesting shapes.

Pluff,
Another base rock option is to check with a local landscape supply house and see if they have any Lava rock, I've seen it used in numerous tanks as base rock.

Nothing was inappropriate at all...I was just throwing in a plug for myself and being a Smart A$$ too.
I have added the link to download the Microsoft Excel Viewer for now, as I'm still waiting for the hosting company to get the Miva Merchant installed on their servers. Until they do this...I cannot do anything with the shopping cart. :( :(
No worries about suggestions of other LFS or MO places...I know that there is room here for everyone, and I know that you all are trying to get the best deal available...so this is a good way for you to find them. As long as you're not bashing AquariumPros.ca or anyone else...I don't have an issue!
