noticed that almost all the seahorses i see for sale in canada are h.reidi but i was wondering if there are any sponsors who can obtain h. erectus

being as how they are listed as being native in atlantic canada u would think this one might be a little easier to get

native to atlantic canada, does that mean it's cold water species and not tropical?

Erectus are all down the eastern seaboard from nfld to florida, but you are right, that does not mean they are easier to get. I am not aware of anyone in Canada breeding them yet, but Aaron would be the best person to know for sure.

Erectus are highly adaptable over time to different water temps, although it would be easier on the horse if it did come from a warmer water area. There are a few New Yorkers that catch them wild out of the river estuaries local to them and raise the fry.

That is GREAT news Ryan, I look forward to getting a few different species to add to my "herd" in the upcoming years, and if their quality is anything like the coral you used to get in, I am sure to buy from you.

I have been trying for a year to get erectus into canada. I cannot find any VERIFIED sources of captive bred erectus. The last claim of erectus turned out to be a Kuda subspecies.

Hey Aaron, have you tried DanU on seahorse.org? I don't know if he does CITES thought.

Mark I just asked Dan about it, and he would be willing to ship to Canada, if the reciever(ie. the store or person with the permits) would keep them for a while, and then resell them. He also stated though that it would become quite pricey. I dont know about any of you, but I would be willing to dish out a bit extra for his horses, and of course some h. erectus!

Come spring, I think we should revisit this. I would be willing to "house" a few dozen horses from Dan in a 90 Gallon tank I have spare in the basement (will be spare come spring) if no other LFS are willing to do it, or can bring in decent Erectus specimens - the only problem is that you are in BC.

Hello

they are labelled captive bread erectus from a very reputable supplier of mine. i will bring some in as soon as it is safe to do so, and post some pictures and maybe that will help to identify them. I am not really that much of an expert on seahorses, right now i am just going by what i see on the stocklist. this supplier is known for there seahorses though as they have over 6 different species.

anymore questions please let me know

scottym i dont think i recieved your email. please try again.

i am waiting for ryan to bring them in i have faith in that what he will get us will be CB horses and plus then its not a risk for us with shipping i am sure that most places want ship to canada with a live arrival guarantee at least buying them from ryan we will be able to see they are healthy first

give me the chance, and ill do my best to get you guys everything you want. i am pretty confident with this supplier. I will inform everyone when the horses will be comming in. i will try for christmass time, but cant make any promises.

All my livestock i import on request never needs prepayment. if it arrives dead or in terrible condition nobody is expected to buy, and i will take the loss. i will be having a new policy where nothing will be for sale untill at least 3 days after arrival, unless otherwise requested by the customer.

the only exception is if somebody is looking for a certain specimen that is considered extremly difficult to keep. and in most cases I will not import the item at all, but if i do there will be a prepayment charge.

thank you very much!

Just to bring everyone up to snuff. I talked to Dan on the phone from the United States, and things are underway to bring his tank bred and raised captive bred seahorses into Canada. We estimate it will take about 3 months to gather all the necessary paperwork. I will keep everyone informed as things develop.

Here is something funny. I went to a local fish store and found 3 male H. Kuda and 3 female H. Barbouri. I asked the boss what species are they. He checked his list and told me that they are H. Erectus. There is another store list their H. Reidi as H. Erectus.

By the way, Aaron, thanks for your effort to bring captive bred horse in. Do you know how much it will cost us when it is available here?

Guys, why are you digging up a year old thread?

Monti, Ryan did have some seahorses in earlier in his 12G tank. If you wanted anything in particular, call him :P Keep in mind this thread's last reply was a year old (minus a few days).

Seems you are right, Vapour. I gotta watch for that.

The mods tell us to use the search function and when we do, we get zombi-threads popping up.

Killer paradox...

BUUTTTTTT, the information is not current!!!!!!
At the moment, I'm trying to bring in Barbs from Frank Gangi, and they may come through DanU.
If you're interested, e-mail DanU and let him know. (they won't be cheap)
If worst comes to worst, I'll import a box of 26 from Australia direct and just sell off what I don't need myself.
