I believe all water for reef can be classified as hard water due to the fact of high KH.

Fredyu:
Are you on city water or well water? Do you use a water softener? Do you use a RO/DI unit - before or after the softener?
Yes saltwater is hard - but you still have to ensure that the source water is free from chloroamine, nitrates, phosphates, bacteriologicals, etc. before you prepare your saltwater.

Most use an RO/DI which removes all hardness. For the longest lifespan of an RO membrane, softened water would be better. Once the salt mix is added a proper amount of hardness is replaced, without the contaminants that were in the tap water.
Is this what you are asking?
