I need help! I bought this unit from Saltwater connection (50 gpd RO/DI)
Just recently I went and bought a prefilter sediment filter from RONA (5 micron) for 8.00 (package of 2) & Carbon Block (0.5 micron) for 14.00. Before I put the the two new filters my TDS meter read 25-30. Now it is between 18-20. Should I change the DI filter now and when do I change the the RO membrane. What is the cheapest place to buy these items? Also whould it be advantageous to put another prefilter ( Sediment or carbon in the mix).

Did you buy it used??

Check your TDS of your tap water, then check your TDS after your RO (Disconnect the DI) and then your final TDS. POst these and this way we can help you more easilly.

I bought the unit a couple of years ago and only changed the sediment filter.
Here is my readings:

Tap = 128
out of RO = 34
out of DI = 21

With the exception of pressure differential the new prefilters are not going to have any major impact on the TDS readings at the output of the system.

The question previously asked is important. Is this system new or used because new RO DI system should be leaving your TDS reading at zero.
Please answer this question before we go any further.

Your DI is shot,

Yes its time for a new one.
I think AJ sells them I Know he ordered some from me and will have them soon but Im not sure what he has in stock as of now.
You may want to ask him...AJ are you here?

I would think the RO membrane is also shot

It doesnt seem like it is actualy shot though based on those numbers it would help to flush the membrane for a while.

Reef Mike I had a brain freeze for a minute there ignore the PM please.
The TDS numbers are a bit high unless you have high phoz.

Bypass the flow restrictor in the drain line and let it run for about 20 minutes.

Could you explain how I Bypass the flow restrictor in the drain line and flush the RO membrane?

Thanks

Its okay..

I calculated about a 74% 1/(34/128) rejection rate, and it being a 50GPH unit I figured it should be in the high 90's so this is why I assumed the RO membrane was spent. It may be clogged and need a good flush.

If you remove the drain line from the system you will notice that inside the line there is a small capilary inserted into the hose. Or you have one inline on the drain. Either way you just need to remove the drain line and run the system without it for a bit. The kicker is that you either need to take the system outside to do this or attach a different hose to the drain output and run it into the sink. You should find the flow restrictor and install a flush kit so this wont happen again in the future. A flush kit is just a loop and a valve that allows you to bypass the flow restrictor and allow full flow to the drain so as to rinse off any scale that has attached itself to the membrane surface.

THanks for catching that Reef Mike Im seeking the midnight blues at this point:beat-pute

I flushed it as you said and now I am getting

out of RO = 37
out of DI = 37

What can do that now?

Should I run the DI for 20 minutes or flush the RO more?

As I said before that DI is definitely shot. I would keep flushing the membrane for a bit longer and remember you are going to get a thing called TDS creep at startup. When you test the RO water be sure to let it run for about 5 minutes beforehand.

Yeah The site is not set up to ship to Canada. I try to avoid shipping small orders out of the country. AJ will be able to help you from here. Feel free to look at my site and let him know anything you need.
