Hi I just bought a Naso Tang a week ago.
It has developed a white patch just behind one of its gills. Is it possible that it may have scraped itself swimming between rocks or is this the early onset of disease?
What should I do?
Thanks for your help.

I would like to see a picture, i just lost 2 fish due to a misdiagnose of ick, started with white spots and within a few days all the fish were sick, and within 5 days two had died. I had the tank set up for 3 months since the last addition of the tank so i have no idea where it came from. Turns out it was a case of the flukes and formalin cured it in 2 days.

As Scott sugested it would be helpfull to see a picture. Also most medications are harmful to reef tanks so be aware. A seperate hospital tank would be the best if you do need to medicate

Agreed with Daniel.
sometimes a PITA but i think it would probably be more effective ,if you decide to medicate, to move to a hospital tank. I have tryed some of the reef safe medications before, and typically i found them to be pretty useless.
Also my Naso gets white patches etc on it when it is stressed or excited (for feeding time etc). Maybe just stress?
Got that picture yet? still would like to see it

Please do post a picture, as it is very hard to diagnose something like this online as it is.
I agree with all that has been said thus far...
It is possible that it is an abbrasion from the rock, but it is also possible that it is something more as well.
Please get a photo to us, and if you do medicate...as afss stated, be sure to move it to a hospital tank to protect the other life in your tank.
Best regards,

Well he e-mailed me 3 pictures and i will post them here. To me they look like the stress patches that i had talked about.
If for some reason you don't want these pics on the net let me know and i will remove them.

How is the fish doing?
I guess its a good thing most people don't seem to have experience with this problem but there must be a few other people that agree with me or have another opinon.

Scott, soon after I got my Sohal tang, I noticed a white patch on its forehead. It was caused (I think) by an abrasion against the rocks. There were no scales left just white flesh. After a few weeks it began to improve and after a month or so the scales grew back as before. In any case it looked very similar to the Naso tang in the pictures. I would think that after a few weeks the patch should get smaller if it is healing. If it stays the same or gets larger it must be something other than an abrasion. Check to see at night where the fish sleeps. Depending on the aquascaping in the tank - maybe the fish has to really crawl into a narrow area in the rocks to feel secure at night. If it sleeps in a awkward area like that maybe the rocks could be opened up abit to let the fish find a secure hole that is not too confining.
