There is a product called Water Absorbing Polymer. It is used for gardening and other uses.

It is dry granules that will absorb 300 - 400 times its weight in water. This means 1lb of polymer will absorb 300 - 400 lbs of water!

This might be useful for quickly absorbing water spills before any damage is done. It might be possible to place it under or around a tank before an emergency happens as insurance.

That looks pretty nifty... I wonder how fast they release the water after they have absorbed it? And would they release it faster or slower when they are not mixed in with soil?

I think for a big spill they water would just rush over them and not have a chance to be absorbed, but for a little constant leak, they could be great! Or after a big spill to absorb it all.. (If they absorb faster than a towel does) :)

Eventually I'll go buy some and do a little experimenting. $15 bucks isnt too bad.
