Mine is not set up any more, but here is are some pictures of it at ~ 1 year.

Fish: Clown, Royal Gramma
Clams: Two maximas (small)
Inverts: Fire Shrimp, emerald crag, few snails and hermits
Coral: Sun polyps, blastomussa, brain, moon, kenya tree, GSP, pink star polyps, goniopora (not recommended), gorgonian, mushrooms, zoos, xenia, candy cane, leather

I used a Red Sea Prizm skimmer (worked fine fro me, but not many fans of it here), penguin 125 (biowheel out) with a chemipure, 2 small rio powerheads, and the Coralife 96W 10,000K 50/50 actinic light hood (would not suggest trying clams under anything less).

I like your tank, nice job
Any details?

any ideas for lighting. I was thinking of getting a coralife unit but it has only two 9 watt bulbs, so I thought about using a light from a 5 gallon and placing two 20 w coralife 50/50's in it. The stupid tank is a hex so its kinda akward to do.

I was also thinking of builing a 2.5 - 4 gallon sump with a 2 gallon fuge lit by one 9w 6500k bulb. Would it work?

Thanks - I listed some equipment details before the first photo.

I started with that same Coralife dual 9w, and then moved up to the Coralife 28W, and finally to the 96W --> I should have started there and saved some $$. Have you checked into the new Ice Cap halide pendants? They come in a 70W version and would work well over a hex shaped tank.
Depends on the type of coral you want to keep. I can say that the 96W Coralife unit was not too much light for a mixed reef.

A sump/fuge would work fine, extra water volume won't hurt either on a 10g and a 9w 6500K bulb will work on chaetomorpha macro algae.

The key with the nano is frequent RO/DI water changes. I changed about 1.5 gallons weekly.

Nice tank kevin - after readingn your post I thought I should provide more details - you also reminded me, I forgot to mention my two prized baby maximas!

As for equipment, I also baffled an AC500 as a HOB fuge, and it's lit by a 250W HQI mh 14k.

thats a nice nano Kevin.

I've been thinking of getting a 12g JBJ nanocube, just with mushrooms and rics and zoos. But you have a nice variety.

Great idea with the AC500 as a HOB fuge. That's a lot of light for a 16g! Any temp problems?

These other lights you mentioned, could you provide dimensions for the 96 watt or links. I only have 12" to play with,
so I thought about this 13w Cf unit at hellolights.com.
I could always use the coralife 20w 50/50 's build my own hood and jam 4 in there or use 3 13w ( as mentioned) the MH bulbs are out of the question for atleast a year.

Thanks for your help guys

Also looking for a used odyssea 10 gallon,

The HOB fuge is working well, obviously I'm skimmerless, and I haven't had much success with birdnest coral frags (they were unattached and fell into my substrate) but everything else seems to be doing quite well... my cheato in the fuge gets light 24hrs during the day and it grows like crazy.

No temp issues on the mh pendant - Its 10" above the water, I do have to topoff every night as I evaporate maybe .25Gallon a day. I originally bought the mh with a view of upgrading to a larger tank, which I'm actually picking up tonight...

Thanks Neemo - I really enjoyed having it and found it was less work than I thought it would be. I didn;t find the JBJ nano cube until after my 10g was setup, or I would have gone that route - really nice units

Also looking for a used odyssea 10 gallon,
Here is a link so you can see the unit - I ordered from another place in the U.S. but can't remember the name, two years ago I could not find a local place that carried it. You can search with: "Coralife 96W, 20" powercompact, with 4-pin 10,000K 50/50 actinic light. But it is 20" and you need 12", so a retro fit as you describe may be a good option.

I hear you about the timing for halides, but here is a link to the Ice Cap halide pendant: http://www.icecapinc.com/all.htm. I have not used one of these, but if I could have found one for my nano, I would have. Seems a perfect solution, assuming its not too $$

I looked at the item, pretty cool. Got me wanting MH bad.
I was thinking though, my friend father is an electrician and has ballasts.pendants etc. But the bulbs he gets are I believe 125w 6500k. Would this be insufficient, I want to keep some colt, kenyan trees along with zoos, shrooms gsp, bubble, and a hairy green mushroom maybe a meat polyp and open brain at some point.

That's a lot of light, but you could do it if the bulb was at the right distance from the water - Bun wrote, above, about 250W on 16g. You don't need that much for the corals listed though.

Here is what I have in my 12 JBJ Nano tank. I have also upgraded the lighting to 3 24w CFL and upgraded the pump to one that is rated 300 GPH, getting a real nice water movement in the tank, I also modded the intake to skim the surface of the water.

2 - Blood Shrimps
2 - Perc Clowns
1 - Scooter Bleeny
1 - Mandarin Boby
1 - Electric Flame Scallop
1 - Coco Worm

3 - Red legged Hermit Crab
12 - Blue Legged Hermit Carbs
1 - Green Emerald Carb
3 - Turbo Snails
6 - Astea Snals

1 - Colt Coral
1 - Buble Coral
1 - Small Ricordia
1 - Sun Polyp
1 - Hammer Coral
1 - Xenia

some mushrooms and polyps

20 lbs of Live Rock.

Let me know what you think. Keep in mind I am new to salt water and this is my first attempt, been keeing freshwater for years.

I like your set up!! I saw this over on AD. Very nice. Looking forward to placing some coral in my tank. How long have you been working on it? Very nice for your first attempt, Im on my third or fourth " attempt" and haven't even got 1/4 to where you are!!!
Can you give me more details on your lighting. Im in the midst of deciding what to do with mine as I need to upgrade, dimension of your lighting
( actually Ive been wanting to upgrade for two months -- ya ya Im procrastinating)

Thanks... Been working on this for about 2 months now.

What I have done to my nano.

1. Removed all stock filter media
2. Added live rock rubble to 2 of the compartments
3. Added a bag of Chemi Pure.
4. Added another bag of something I can not remember the name I will post later.

As for the lighting I used 3 stock CFL that are for the JBJ Nano Cube I removed the internal ballast and replaced it with a Fulham Workhorse 5 ($30 from LiteMor) It has the ability to drive all 3 lights with no problem.

The 3 lights are 24 w CFL so I have a total of 72 Watts in the Nano which everything so far likes, I also added 2 fans and a LED night light to the lid. I managed to do all this without cutting any addtional hole in the lid.

I also cut the plastic just above the filter intake to create a surface skimmer, it works well.

Very cool. You definitely have a nice project on your hands, me, unfortunately for some dumb reason I used a 12.5 hex tank that restricts me to 12" of play for anything, so lighting is very tricky and as I have found nearly impossible. Would love to get a nano cube. Have been looking at the JEBO Odyssea 10 gallon.
Hope to post pics of my barren tank soon.:(

I understand that I may be going overkill for the wanted specimens, but thought better to go all out then have to upgrade. Have been looking at the lights on hellolights( 13w CF) think I might just go with that.$45.00 for 3 isnt that bad and gives 3.9 watts of light per gallon. Ballast is small enough to play with.

Thanks for your help again Kevin.

Thanks James! I am definitely proud and happy with the 25 gallon....
Muggy the anenome changes sizes depending on his MODE and MOOD.....
Right now he is the size of a medium size dinner plate...
Other times he is the size of a small plate.....
He is definitely GROWING and HAPPY....
No fish missing...so I am darn lucky....I am waiting for the royal gramma
to swim to close then **I WILL NOT HAVE TO CATCH HIM!!!*** hahaohaohoahohehehehehheheheheh (just kidding..I hope he does not bite
the bullet....I am so mean eh!! hahaha)

The watchman goby lives darn near under the anenome..hope he does not
decide to SWIM UP!! hahaha

The anenome sorta MAKES MY HOBBY for me right now.....
The clowns dancing in it just cannot get tired of seeing...
Anyone want a video sent to them of the clowns in the anenome PM
me with your email address and I will send it....takes a few minutes to
download but it is neat....

Sorry about the rambling..I am overtired. :)

If I had a nano, I'd keep mostly zoos and mushroom because they don't require a lot of calcium and very least maintenance.
