I suspect that due to the recent unfortunate unrest on Canreef.com's message board, there will be an influx of new members joining the message board here at Aquariumpros.
As a moderator here, I would like to welcome these new members, and assure you that we have a relatively relaxed atmosphere here and a true "Reefer's Pub" where non-aquarium related topics are welcomed, not oppressed.
There is also a BC Trading area for those of us west-coasters, and I will also (with the help and permission of AJ) setup a forum for Vancouver Reef Club discussions.
And all you Easterners, be nice to the new west-coasters that join us!

I could use a detritivore kit, but no one is willing to ship one to Canada.

On the more serious note, thanks for the welcome. Looking forward to picking your brains...:D

We don't officailly have our 'kits' together yet...but what are you looking for exactly? If you can let me know the specifics...I'm sure that we can get something to you ASAP (and being a Canadian company...we DO ship to Canada)!!
Hope this helps...

Thanks for the reply
First thing first: Victor, J&L unfortunately don't carry detritivore kits. I asked them couple of times and they said that they don't plan on making them because they personally don't believe in them. Allen said that if you have good rocks you should be fine, which I do not agree with at all, but oh well. :D
As for detritivore kits, I have some bristleworks in my aquarium. Problem is they are only in the rocks and don't leave them too often. I need some creatures like pods and other worms that will venture into sandbed and stir it up. Right now my sand looks dead. No bubbles, no different colors(just in some very small places) no life at all. There is this stuff on it that looks like dust settling on it as well (probably dieoff from my rock since that's where the stuff is mostly). I do have a tigertail cuke but he is not a problem since my bed looks same before and after I added him in. Besides he is just sitting there and is only moving at night.
Thanks for the help.

AJ, what cvrle is looking for is infauna detrivore kits similiar to what Inland Aquatics and IPSF offer. I mentioned these to in the suggestion area.
Marko, it isn't that Allen doesn't agree with them it is that they don't have room to set up the neccesary equipment for them and he thinks spending the kind of money they ask for (at IA and ISPF) is crazy for what you get.

I agree that the prices are not very good from other places...but if you import animals...you pay the price (shipping + insurance + duties + CITES + and the list goes on...). What we are planing to do is cultivate our own - thus only one or two shipments to 'seed' things initailly...then it's just a waiting game.
The set-up for this isn't hard or expensive...especially as we culture our Live Rock. This way as new pieces of rock arrive...they are cultured within the same closed system...and the levels of critter population grows dramatically.
All I need to know was what size tank and it's related info (substrate, population, etc.) so that we can get an idea of how much/many critters you will need. Like I said...it's just a matter of importing them right now...but we will be able to distribute our own very soon.
Let me know the size of the 'kit' you are looking for...and I'll see what we can do for you.
Best regards,
cvrle1

Troy: Last time I asked him about detritivore kits he said that personaly he thinks that you don't need them if you have good LR. Maby he ment something else by that but the idea I got was that he didn't think that they were usefull. Just a misunderstanding I guess.
As for my aquarium it is a 33 gallon with 2-3 inch DSB (depending where)1/2 of it is aragamax and 1/2 is live sand(not really but thats what they sold it as) I have 2 true percs, 1 firefish gobby and one cleaner wrasse. Tigertail cuke and emerald crab as well. Asterea and nassarius snails as well as blue legged hermits. Couple of coras but they got nothig to do with kits. As Troy mentioned I was looking for something like IA or IPSF has. This is what they offer in theirs so some of those would be good for the kit:
Amphipods, Copepods, Mysis Shrimp, Gammarus Shrimp, Miniature Brittle Stars, Baby Bristle Worms, SandBed Clams, MicroHermits, Stomatella Varia, Peppermint Snails, Orange Spaghetti Worms, Micro Stars.
Oveously you won't be able to put all of those in the package, but a mix of worms, "bugs", and stars for example would be fine. Few of each would be fine since they reproduce quickly (or so I heard)
Hopefully this helps a bit. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who would be interested in this package since canadians can't get them from the US of A. And as you mentioned it probably would be a bit cheaper that IA or IPSF because ther would be no extra charges on top.

I'm looking for a kit to establish a 155gal tank with a 5" sand bed. My initial idea was to order two kits from IA and have them shipped to Seattle where I could pick them up. Let me know if you can do this and how much it would be. I'd love to buy Canadian and do whenever possible.
