Hello.
Question.
I have been using this 'cycle' organic starter stuff for about three and a half weeks. I read the fine print. "For marine systems, double dosage is recommended". I have only been applying freshwater dosages accidently. I know this is not a problem. just slower. I havn't doubled up since this discovery.
Should I?
50 lbs of LR in the tank. 45 from AJ, 5 from the LPS.
Colourful. Lots of algae.
Very little other life on the new rocks that I've seen though.
No worries.
Although I am accepting donations of sediment infauna.:)

The recomendatins I've recieved was NOT to use these cycle products. Your tank will cycle on its own and these products just throw your cycle off (eventually recovering on its own time). I've never added any of these products to my 77 gal and it seemed to cycle fine. Just be patient and let nature take its course.
Hope this helps,
IJO

Ditto to IJO's recommendation. Stop using the "cycle" stuff and let your tank run it's own course. With the live rock you've got in there your tank will already be on it's way through the normal cycle process. It's gonna be another 3-4 weeks before the cycle is complete, but only by testing for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates will you be able to truly tell when your tank is ready for it's first inhabitants.
If you need some explaination of the cycle process, and what to be looking for with your test kits, let me know.
If you continue to dose the cycle product, you'll never get an accurate reading with your test kits, and thus never know when your tank is fully cycled.
As was suggested ,relax, kick back and let nature run it's course! :D

I don't think that adding cycle will through your natural cycle off. It may help speed it up a bit (debateable) but I am pretty sure that it won't hinder it.
IMO products like cycle are a bandage for an ailing system. If you need a quick fix to relieve a problem to give you a chance to get to its root then they are good. Otherwise (in this case for starting a cycle) i feel they are probably a waste of money better spent elsewhere.

Right!!
Thank you.
That's what I get for listening to a not so local fish store.
A dead shrimp would have worked great. But the LFS guy knew there was no money involved for him. So he gladly sold me a bottle. What was I thinking.
Like Dman said...this hobby is based on patience yet we still look for ways to speed it up. (ie bottle of ammonia)
I will discontinue using that product. Is only about 1/3 bottle left.
Brown diatoms on my sand bed are growing and spreading and seeping down the side of the glass below the sand. Just like I've seen in pictures.
Things seem to be going fine.
I still have 3 snails and 3 small hermit crabs. I'd like to keep them there.
Thanks everyone.
And IJO, I just found out we ARE related and I'm driving along the 401 as I type so I can come and visit.
