JRF: looks great! what are the dimensions? (rough guess will do).
The front slope is for clam/coral viewing right? I think I saw you mention that some where on RC.

Hi,
I designed the shape to fit in a given spot in the house, in this case it is against a stairway wall ( the angle of the tank will match the slope of the stiarway ).
Kenzy, yes, the angle is for "look down" viewing. A good spot for clams.
The dimensions are 8 feet on the bottom, almost 6 feet on top ( the angle joining the two ), 30" tall, and 28" wide. The gallonage of this tank is questionable, and debateable. After thinking about it some more, I think one of the guys on RC was pretty close. It is probably somewhere around 290 gallons - 305 gallons.
Thanks

Please keep us updated on your progress, I think it's a great shape for a tank especially given the location in your home.

If I understand correctly, the sloped area will be running underneath the stairs? If so, how is that practical for viewing?
Also, how are you planning to light that area of the tank?
Very interesting design, and I bet it'll look great in it's intended location. (Perhaps you could show some photos of the location you're putting this neat tank?)

Hi,
The tank will be set against the wall rather than "in wall". The wall is almost 10 feet long so the tank will take up most of the wall space. If you look closely at the picture, you may be able to see a vague outline of where the tank will be "against the wall".
Planned lighting will be 4 pendants ( 2 - 250W 10K and 2 - 400W 20K ) and possible the addition of two 110W VHO actinincs mounted on the wall. The pendants will hang over the "flat" portion of the top only. The spread of light from the pendants should be plenty enough to light the sloped part of the tank.
I will keep updates coming as they become available as this is planned to be a long project. :infinity: I hope to use patience and carefull strategy on this tank.
Thanks

I will keep updates coming as they happen ( which as I said may be infrequent ).

Out of curiousity. If you place the clams in the 45degree area, won't that cut down on the light reaching them? Is this a concern.

FWIW,
The tank capacity is just shy of 305 gallons, minus the thickness of the tank itself.
I hope you're left handed:D

Hi,
afss, I havn't really decided to put clams down in that area of the tank ( due to some light loss ). I may just put some lower light corals in that area or if the light is sufficient, maybe some table top Acro's in that area. I think that would be cool to "look down" onto.
Dman, thanks , that sound about right. I will be using a floating acrylic safe magnet to clean the tank. When coraline starts to develop on the sides I will use a long handled acrylic safe "blade" to scrape with. Oh, I am ambidextrious ( sp. ? ) . I use my left or right hands equally well ( not what your thinking ). :roflmao:
Thanks

hi,
lol, well, I guess by typing "hands" it sounds like I have multiple "hands".
afss, it will probably be quite some time before I get water in this thing, still a lot of work to do. Maybe I will have water in it by first part of next year (?).
Thanks

Hi,
The tanks sitting on top are just there for the moment ( to keep them out of the way on the floor ). They will be placed under the stand for sumps.

Looking good :) is the price of this thing saving you a ton of money or are you just doing it for the experience?

well at least the stand looks rugged enough.... Are you going to sheet the top with something, or leave it open like that?

Hi,
I will be putting 3/4" plywood on the top, 1/2" plywood on the botom and 1/2" Oak plywood on the sides.

We got in in place last night. Still a lot of work to do to finish out the stand. Also a lot of plumbing to do, etc, etc, etc.

Thanks! I hope to finish the stand in a few more weeks. Then begin working on the plumbing, and beefing up the floor in the crawl-space ( to make myself feel better )!

Very nice work. And as pointed put out numerous times very interesting design. When you getting running I'd be interested in how easy/hard it is to clean the inside slope ???. Good luck with your project

Hi.
The floor system is complete ( I hope ). The tank will be sitting directly over three, tripled 2x8 beams, with five vertical supports. The tank runs paralell to the floor joists. Picture included.

You did an excellent job on the stand and canopy. Very nice looking stain.
The tank is looking great already. I'm sure once you start adding fish, corals and anything else you have planned it will be amazing.

Gujustud - Did you notice you were replying to a thread that was over a year old?

very neat....I think the idea of the looking down on the clams
is super....Should be able to still light it up enough ...and
the clams would look obviously better then looking straight
in on them from regular viewing angle....excellent idea!
If I ever have a tank designed custom I am going to keep
that idea in mind....
Congrats...good luck...keep us posted with updated
pics as you progress please.
Thanks for posting.

The thread may be old, but that tank once completed and stocked will truly ROCK!!
If he's still around, I'd love to see what it looks like now.
