I have a 40 g bowfront. 3 months old, 50lbs live rock, Deltec skimmer, PFO light. 2 clowns, cleaner wrasse, serpent star, brittle star, sebae anenome, Rose bta, plate, Galaxia, hammer, my favorite-Sun corals pink orange and yellow in 2 colonies.

Water levels Amm 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 0

Several problems.

Battling HA and loosing- tried adding more snails and a lawnmower Blenny-no luck. I have read all the posts on this subject but not sure what to do. Feeding isnt a problem as the fish have been in quaratine for the last 4 weeks and have just been reintroduced to the tank, HA has been there for 3 weeks

Algae has now landed on my Sun corals and killed a few heads. Has also killed a Pink Acro completey(I think)

#2 Plate has in the past 3 days not looked too good. Has small (pimple) looking growths and is very deflated. Looked great up until. Have fed it small pieces of raw shrimp soaked in selcon (and not) it eats then spits it back out 20 min later. Im ging to wait it out and see if he looks after himself unless people have some ideas.

#3 I think I have defective clowns. They are crazy. Absolutely no interest in any anenome's at all. Tried to nest in the plate and neither plate or fish was happy with the relationship. They also attack the surface of the water when I shut out the light at night and I think they may jump right out. The cleaner wrasse also thinks he is a clown and follows them all day long.

Sorry for the long post. New guy.

Thanks in advance

Dwayne

I think if you post this in the just getting started form you may gat a quicker and better responce. You said your plate coral has a single bubble. Do you mean a Donut/Modern Coral? Or is it a hard plate coral? My Modern only eats brine shrimp maybe the piece of shrimp was to large or maybe it didn't like it dipped in selcon ? The algea problem may be becuase the photo period is to long. How long you leave your lights on may be a factor. And as far as the Clowns are concerned, their names are self explanitory ! IMO

I am going to up an opinion here, maybe not right but I think that at three months old you are putting too much in your tank.

The hair algae is a nutrient problem whether it be fromn feeding or something else.

Do more frequent water changes for starters that is the easiest way to help anything in a tank, I have learned that from experience. In a 40,(I have a 45) I would do a 5 gallon water change every week for about a month, you will be astounded at the results. This leaves the water pristine, as a matter of fact I do not even run a skimmer.

Don't get discouraged it will get better, you are just dealing with a young tank.

I think your big problem is you added too much too soon.
Go with the water changes, maybe add some crabs and be careful how much you feed.

Try feeding your plate smaller pieces, when I first got my open brain the first two feedings I gave it too big a piece and it did the same thing, spit it out 20 mintues later. My brain doesn't seem to like Selcon much either. Not the same coral but a close relative.
